My speech didn't work yesterday

What a sign of the changing culture in Nebraska, playing the part of health inspector I had to investigate a cockroach complaint at an apartment complex. Upon entry and seeing the tenants, I knew I was in trouble when it came to communication. New immigrants to the United States from Sudan who have been in country for less than a year. After communicating through hand signals and broken English for an hour, any six to eight minute speech that I have to give on taxes or storm water will seem like a piece of cake.

In the career that I have chosen I have both the pleasure and the burden of seeing public speakers almost everyday. The meetings that I attend three nights a week feature the art of public speaking, it doesn't take long to pick out a speaker that is unprepared or one that is over there head on a subject. There is one thing though that will cover all of the problems speakers have, confidence. I am not going to say that confidence is always a good thing because it can fool people as well. Speakers with no real experience on a subject can end up looking like an expert with a little bravado and a little planning. The only problem with that is the half hour after the speech when they have to start answering questions from the panel or the audience that maybe they weren't quite prepared for. Confidence can also save you, it is the great equalizer in a debate when you maybe are outmatched on a subject. I would say to be prepared and letting that preparation give you confidence is the best rule.
